Most of the time, a half-ton diesel is not the right choice for a fifth wheel. Payload is the problem.
Half-ton diesels can be comfortable and efficient. Some tow small trailers well. But fifth wheels put pin weight in the bed, and that weight can eat up payload fast. Diesel engines, luxury trims, 4x4, passengers, cargo, and the hitch all reduce what is left.
Look at the actual door sticker. Then estimate loaded pin weight, not brochure dry pin weight. Add passengers, hitch, tools, and gear. If the math is close, it is not a comfortable setup.
A small fifth wheel might fit a properly equipped half-ton on paper. But many buyers are better served by a 2500 or 3500, especially if they travel often, carry family, or tow in mountains. Do not buy the trailer first and hope the truck works.
