Should you buy a diesel truck with 300,000 miles?

A buyer is looking at a very high-mileage diesel truck because the price is attractive or the engine has a strong reputation.

At 300,000 miles, you are buying condition and history. Not just an engine. Some diesel engines can reach that mileage and keep working. The rest of the truck may not be as forgiving. Transmission wear, front-end parts, steering, brakes, frame rust, wiring, seats, door hardware, cooling parts, fuel-system parts, and emissions equipment can all be tired. Do not buy a 300,000-mile truck because someone says the engine is known to last. Buy it only if the records are strong, the cold start is clean, the transmission behaves, the frame is solid, and the price reflects the risk. It can make sense as a work truck, farm truck, backup tow rig, or project. It is a risky choice if you need dependable daily transportation and have no repair budget. A cheap high-mileage diesel can become expensive fast.
