Buying in TexasPublished Sep 29, 2026Asked by Viktor Makushev1 answer
What should a Texas truck dealer include in an out-the-door quote?
Two Texas dealers advertise similar diesel trucks at similar prices, but the totals discussed by phone are different. What written information makes the offers genuinely comparable?

Ask for a written, itemized total for the exact truck, identified by VIN, using your registration location. Tell the dealer whether the comparison should exclude a trade-in and optional protection products. That keeps the starting point consistent.
The quote should separate the vehicle price, applicable tax, title and registration charges, dealer fees, and every accessory or product being added. Ask which items are optional and whether the advertised price depends on dealer financing, a trade-in, or a rebate you may not qualify for.
An out-the-door purchase price and the total cost of a loan are different numbers. Compare the truck purchase first; then review the financing terms, including interest and the total of payments. A smaller monthly payment does not establish a cheaper deal.
In Texas, dealers handle the title and registration application when selling a vehicle, so request a clear explanation of those charges and the paperwork you will receive. The exact amounts depend on the transaction; a generic online fee estimate is not the final quote.
Before traveling, have the dealer confirm the quote's expiration and whether a deposit is refundable. Keep the written version. If the numbers change at the desk, ask for the new itemization before signing anything.
